# Reddit API changes: the dates and what they break

On 2026-09-30 Reddit announced that RSS feeds stop on 2026-11-13, that apps not registered by 2027-01-12 lose API access and that public access to its Data API ends by March 2027. Below, each date with what it breaks and its source, then how to keep reading public Reddit posts and comments: through Reddit first, or with SocialToAI.

## The timeline

Each row names its source and the day it was read; the sources are listed in full at the end. For the end of public access Reddit gave a month, not a day.

## What the Data API Terms already say

Reddit offers official Data APIs under its Data API Terms. Using them for commercial purposes, for research beyond the rate limits, or for anything the terms do not expressly permit needs a separate agreement with Reddit, and deriving revenue from them needs Reddit's express written approval.

## What Reddit's API costs

Reddit's Data API Terms state no price. Reddit reserves the right to charge fees for future use of or access to the Data APIs, at rates it sets at its sole discretion, and commercial use, research beyond the rate limits or any use the terms do not expressly permit needs a separate agreement with Reddit. Source: [Reddit's Data API Terms, section 3.1](https://redditinc.com/policies/data-api-terms), checked 2026-10-30.

Reddit's help centre says it offers both free and paid access: reasonable use of Reddit Embeds is free, bulk export of Reddit data is significantly limited by default, and select developers who need broader access may be charged fees to lift those limits. Any commercial use needs Reddit's permission and a contract. Neither page lists a price: what commercial access costs is agreed with Reddit, deal by deal.

## Keep reading through Reddit itself

- **Register your app** before 2027-01-12: unregistered developers lose API access after the deadline.
- **For commercial use, an AI product or research beyond the rate limits**, agree terms with Reddit, as the Data API Terms require.
- **For moderators' alerts that ran on RSS**, Reddit points to its Discord Relay app on the Developer Platform.
- **To move an app to the Developer Platform**, follow Reddit's [migration guide](https://developers.reddit.com/docs/guides/migrate/public-api). Its $1M App Migration Program pays $1,000 to eligible apps that migrate; apply through the [registration form](https://developers.reddit.com/app-registration) by 2026-11-30.

## Or read public Reddit posts and comments with SocialToAI

SocialToAI reads what is publicly visible on Reddit, with no Reddit app or account on your side: one key over HTTP, or one MCP address for your AI client. Calls cost from 2 credits (≈ $0.004–$0.0067); failed calls are free and commenters are anonymised. Commercial use of Reddit content stays subject to Reddit's own terms.
